Basil Grimm Jr. is the son of Henry and Veronica Grimm, and the brother of Sabrina and Daphne. He was born during the time that his parents were under a sleeping spell and was kidnapped by the Master of the Scarlet Hand for the purpose of stealing his body. Basil Grimm Jr has a similar appearance to his grandfather, Basil Grimm, after whom he was named. He has curly red hair and green eyes.

Biography[]

He is seen a few times in the Sisters Grimm series, including when Red mentions her "baby brother" at the end of The Unusual Suspects and throughout The Problem Child, though there is no indication that Red's baby brother was actually a Grimm. Despite this, there is no real contact with him until The Inside Story. Sabrina manages to get a hold of him while Mirror is battling Merlin. When Mirror discovers this, he demands to know where the child is, and it is revealed that Basil Jr. thinks Mirror is his "daddy." Sabrina is then forced to give him up in order to save the lives of everyone else but has the hope of later rescuing him. Eventually, Basil Jr. is reunited with his family. As of The Inside Story, he is approximately a year and a half old. At first in book 9, he is only calm around Red since he knows her, and he won't stop fussing when he is with his true parents.

From the first epilogue, Basil apparently decided that he would be a bachelor forever (Sabrina described him as being the only sensible one because of this). He is depicted as 6 feet tall at Sabrina's wedding.

Etymology[]

The name Basil (Arabic باسل | /ˈbæzəl/; royal, kingly) comes from the male Greek name Vassilios (Greek: Βασίλειος, female version Bασιλική), which first appeared during the Hellenistic period. It is derived from "basileus" (Greek: βασιλεύς), a Greek word of pre-Hellenic origin meaning "king", from which words such as basilica and basilisk (via Latin), as well as the eponymous herb (via Old French) derive, and the name of the Italian region Basilicata, which had been long under the rule of the Byzantine Emperor (also called basileus).
